Kudos once again to my YouTube recommending gremlins. I selected this live performance last night to accompany me while I made dinner. Instead, I swung between dissolving into tears and grooving to the terrific music. I knew that Nile Rodgers was involved in a lot of the music I adored back in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, but to hear so many of those songs in one set overwhelmed me.
What a great performance! I’d completely forgotten about “Get Lucky”; and drummer Ralph Rolle does a great job on vocals for “Let’s Dance,” more than capably standing in for the inimitable David Bowie. The whole set is pure fire.
When I first saw the video’s title, I felt a little badly about not knowing a thing about Pinkpop. It’s a Dutch pop and rock music festival held on or near the Pentecost weekend—and it’s also the oldest and longest-running rock music festival in the world.
I never understood the anti-disco backlash back in the day, but being an impressionable teen, I outwardly went along with it. At home, I continued playing my disco albums.1 The music was just too good to give up. This may sound silly, but it gives me hope that so many people today love Rodgers’ music.
which were mostly the Bee Gees, plus the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack
Wow, that's fabulous. I've only watched half so far, but both "Get Lucky" and the Bowie cover are great. Will def watch the whole thing.
Imho, it wasn't the public that caused the backlash against disco but the music industry, which chased the disco profits and abandoned so many rock acts in the mid to late 70s. The industry paid for it with a major drop in sales. But when has the music industry truly cared about its product as opposed to its profit?!
This is fabby stuff. Was never really into disco, but did dig select acts…Donna Summer for example. Thanks for sharing this!
