This is a complicated song for me. I never heard it until I worked as a sous chef at a country club. It is a staple for wedding bands, and I found it fun and catchy.
Then I tried to learn it. There is a "cheater" way to play it with open chords, but it isn't quite right (and yes, I can tell the difference), but playing it the correct way is quite tough indeed.
One of the greatest power pop tunes of all time! I agree that the songs sung by the drummer are more rockin or exciting. I remember seeing them perform live about 12 or 13 years at an arts festival, and they were super tight. So many bands from that era have lost a step or octave or two when they play live. They definitely did not.
