Great call on the song! I feel you on not letting things get you down. Been really tired myself. Amazing what more sleep can do for the mood. Hope you get a chance to get some.
All the permutations, from Funkadelic to Parliament, to the combo, to George Clinton’s solo work, to all the associated band member’s releases (Bootsy, et al) are all essential organs to the body that they make together. I’m excited to see what other tunes you choose from this family tree.
'Free Your Mind' was recorded and mixed while tripping on very strong LSD. As with The Stooges 'Raw Power' or MC5's 'Back In The USA' the mix has its warts, but that is what I love about it. The title track pans all over the place, while Hazel pulls out another one of his extraordinary lysergically soaked guitar jams that oozes wah, whammy, and feedback as the mantra of "The Kingdom of Heaven is Within" is maniacally repeated over and over. Sure, the bottom end is a bit weak for a Funkadelic release, but it is a testament to Clinton's state of mind whilst he was mixing it, and for that alone, it has a lot of charm. It's a killer album and one that demands serious volume (just turn the bass up a bit on your stereo).
I am a big fan of Parliament-Funkadelic and its' related entities, and I can assure you their canon is worth your time.

I know the feeling, thankfully music never failed to cheer me up!
