Hello! Have you missed me? I ask because my absence for the past week was not voluntary… not that all y’all could have known that. Shortly after I posted last Wednesday’s MotD, our internet started acting up and then completely quit. The earliest service call appointment was yesterday, so … yeah.
Lots of people offer all manner of commentary about being addicted to the internet. As I’m not on most social media sites, I don’t think of myself as an addict. That said, I keenly felt its absence, primarily because my work is 100% remote and without the internet, I can’t work. I also missed this little corner of Substack, and the ‘stacks I subscribe to.
I didn’t need loads of time to come up with a strong MotD to return with. It came to me within a few hours of the ‘net going down, and nothing else offered any competition.
I have nothing original to say about the mighty Led Zeppelin, so I won’t even try. I don’t have a clear memory of first hearing their music, probably because it was pervasive throughout my youth. Between my mom’s siblings listening to rock and my discovery of the storied WSAI radio station, I heard a lot of Led Zep. Perhaps too much: like the Beatles, it’s extremely rare for me to listen to them now.
I bought the four-disc Led Zeppelin box set when it was released and enjoyed it a lot over the years; and I’ve somehow acquired nearly all of their studio releases. Hearing “Communication Breakdown”—which was the B-side to Zep’s first US single, “Good Times Bad Times”—today with fresh ears reminded me of what I liked most about the band. It may be time to put them back in rotation.
Welcome back! I spent last weekend sampling Led Zeppelin "Essentials" on Apple Music while mowing my micro-Ponderosa. Was never a fan back in the day, for reasons unknown. Have to say now though, that in addition to being familiar with way more songs than I would have thought, that I enjoyed and appreciated their crafting and musicality.
So glad to have you back in the old inbox -- and a great comeback song, too!
