A few minutes ago, my mind started working on its own take on a holiday song:
“‘Tis the season to be stressin’ fa la la la la la la la la
“With this shit I can’t be messin’ fa la la la la la la la la”
At that line, I decided to shut it down.1 It’s been a challenging week for me and it’s only Wednesday; but I see no value in wallowing in the negatives. Fortunately for me, I knew where to find exactly the stuff I needed to counteract it. I hope you consider yourself fortunate that I’m sharing it with you.
You dig? I sure am, once upon a time called Right Now.
I’m quite sure I never heard this song on the radio. Parliament’s 1984 greatest hits compilation The Bomb somehow found its way into my digital library, and that’s how I discovered “P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up).” The bomb indeed!
Every bit of this song is hitting me hard today. The conversation interspersed with the music tickles me, and I could ride the waves of groove all afternoon. Righteous horns, layers of keyboards that include the shimmering sound from an ARP String Ensemble, and the usual suspects (including George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Ray Davis, and Michael Hampton) combine to create 7+ minutes of fun to get lost in.
“P. Funk” was the lead track on Parliament’s 1975 album Mothership Connection. Since the only other Parliament song I’ve featured here is also off it, I think I know where to start exploring. First, I think I need to listen to “P. Funk” a few more times … I’m sure my smile can get bigger.
if anyone cares to add their own lyrics, have at it
Even though things be pretty damn funky out there, we need more of this better kind of funk.
"Let me get my sunglasses on/That's the law around here, you got to wear your sunglasses."
Funk coated, freaky and habit forming. This is what made me a Clinton fan for life.
