So there is—thanks, David! And a county as well, which apparently was part of a big land scandal in the 1790s. Perhaps the Brits knew their American history and didn't want to be associated with that! [removes tongue from cheek]
Upstairs at Eric's is utterly brilliant. Alyson Moyer's voice is extraordinary. I will have to admit I usually skip this song so thanks for bringing it to my attention.
As for other synth-pop bands, Platinum Blonde is a great band to explore off the top of my head.
Also, I believe there was an band called Yazoo that was known in NA and they changed the name so as not to create confusion (or give up mistaken royalties!)
I'd be surprised if they were in your library because they are a Canadian band. Standing in the Dark and Alien Shores, the first two albums, are where I would start.
There's an American town named Yazoo (I think it's in Mississippi). Maybe the American label didn't want to accidentally give offense.

It's been decades since I've listened to it all the way through, but I won't disagree with you, MK. And agreed on Moyer's voice.
Don't have Platinum Blond in my library, but will check them out on YouTube. Do have favorite songs/albums by them?
