July is arguably the worst month to have a medical emergency in the US, because it’s when newly minted MDs and DOs begin their internships. They’ve completed their academic studies, and now begin to practice medicine for real, which includes starting specialty training (e.g., internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, etc.). Everyone already in the residency/fellowship1 system moves up a level in their training too, which means lots of doctors are taking on new roles and are adjusting to them and the new workload.
Since I’ve been out of the healthcare sector and divorced from my MD spouse for decades, I haven’t thought about this phenomenon for a long time. But it’s the only explanation I have for today’s MotD popping up on the radio station in my mind.
“Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)” was the first single off the late great Robert Palmer’s fifth studio album, Secrets. The song peaked at number 14 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 1979 and propelled the album to number 19 on the Billboard 200.
Palmer was nominated for the 1980 Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal for “Bad Case,” losing to Bob Dylan for “Gotta Serve Somebody.”2 The video above is called the “official” video, but I don’t know what that means in this context, as it obviously includes bits from later songs’ videos, including “Addicted to Love” from 1985 (for which Palmer did win the Best Male Rock Vocal Grammy in 1987).
It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to “Bad Case,” which is a shame because it’s a terrific song. Palmer is as energetic as ever, and well accompanied by Pierre Brock (bass), Kenny Mazur (guitar), Steve Robbins and Jack Waldman (keyboards), and Dony Wynn (drums). Mazur and Wynn in particular really drive this song. Yum! It’s a great way to start a new day, week, and month.
not all doctors take a fellowship, as they’re needed only if one wants to subspecialize. For example, a resident whose specialty is internal medicine may decide to further specialize in hematology, rheumatology, or any of several other subspecialties
the other three nominees were Joe Jackson, Rod Stewart, and Frank Zappa. What a mix!
I did not know that about the medical industry in July. Well worth knowing!
Great tune and video to start the week.
Gone way, way too soon.
