Roaming
I first heard of this band when in college, via our school newspaper. I can’t remember if I was editor then, or on staff, but I do remember it was via our Arts Editor’s music column, “Writing on Vinyl.” Ray, a drummer of fair talent, introduced our gang to a lot of emerging 70s acts who would later become icons.
The two artists I remember best and love to this day are Elvis Costello and the B-52s. I’ve been fortunate to see Elvis live on several occasions over the years. The missus and I caught the B’s a couple of years ago, on their supposed farewell tour.
They did not disappoint. They aren’t billed the “Worlds Greatest Party Band” for nothing.
“Roam” is not only my favorite B-52s tune, it is one of my favorite tunes period. Whenever I am feeling down and slow, I know what to do. Hit play, and rock out.
Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson are such a great harmonic match and “Roam” showcases it perfectly. The low end growls, higher octave shrieks and resonant timbre of their respective voices really complement the light, catchy rhythms of the song’s music and lyrics.
The B-52s came out of the alternative music scene that flourished in Athens, Georgia in the mid/late 70s. The band’s lineup has stayed intact, except for the loss of guitarist Ricky Wilson to AIDS-related illness in the mid 80s. They are a cultural touchstone, in my opinion. Long may they roam!
If you need a pick me up today or any other day, there’s no better tonic than a dose of the B’s.
I read this initially as “A.I.’s” rather than “AL’s” and almost blocked it! My robot hate almost led to you catching a stray. Glad I paused to double check and am now excited to check out your work. Apologies for almost letting my disdain for the algorithm overwhelm my common sense!
