how did you get like that?

I’m not sure how I discovered Brittany Howard, but I know it was via today’s featured song. With my first listen, everything in the song entranced me. The fluid music gets a nice sparkle from the keyboard’s upper register, and Howard’s lovely voice has shades of the great Billie Holiday to my ear.

“Stay High” is from Howard’s 2019 debut solo album, Jaime. The song won her the best rock song Grammy in 2021. Prior to this release, she has had a successful career with a few bands, most notably Alabama Shakes.

I’m not familiar with any of her extant work beyond “Stay High,” so I find myself facing a double dilemma: what album to explore first; and how to successfully resist that temptation until after I take care of some business. Suggestions are welcome, as always.
