No one wins

It’s the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, the beginning of the Allied invasion of Europe. It’s also my birthday. Sharing my day with this solemn anniversary has always tempered the celebration for me. It was only 15 years after the landing at Normandy that I arrived.

Apropos of this day, and of the current circumstances in which we find ourselves, is this Neil Young banger, from his 1992 masterpiece “Harvest Moon.”

The lineup on this song is as powerful as the subject matter and lyrics, with Nicolette Larson, Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor lending backing vocals. The video I chose showcases a collaboration with Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Neil hangs with the best and rightfully so.

War of Man is a lament on man’s repeated choice of destruction and violence over nature and beauty. Same as it ever was, it seems. Yet, does Young portend that nature will be the ultimate victor in this battle?

One can hope.
